When did solicitors become 'lawyers'?

They didn't. Solicitors and lawyers are different things. If a solicitor is calling themselves a lawyer it means they are kidding themselves.

We Brits use the term Solicitors.

We don't call them Lawyers over here.

Solicitor sounds more appropriate and professional.
