When did scientist first recognize that prehistoric sculptures were very old?

If something is prehistoric, it is thousands of years old. Most sculptures that old are obviously very old. They are usually found buried deep in the ground. It would be easier to answer if we knew what kind of sculptures you were thinking about and you defined what you consider very old.
