when did color photos start to become common?

at my school there are displays of student photos taken throughout its history
the earliest pictures from the 1920s are all in black and white until the early 70s or so
when did the exact "transition" between black and white and color begin? was there a stage when color film became more affordable or did it happen gradually?
 
I was a student in 1958. School photos were all black and white. Even when my parents took us to a professional photographer, the photos were in black and white and if you paid extra, the photographer "tinted" them later.

Color film really started being popular 1972, when I was married.

Yes it was a gradual process.
