When cooking tomato sauce, are you supposed to cover the pot?

I'm cooking for my boyfriend because he is going to be home from work in about an hour, but it's 2 a.m. here so there's nobody in my house who is awake. I've cooked tomato sauce before, but usually with my mom's help (I don't really cook that often). Anyways, I just wanted to know if within the hour and a half that you cook the sauce, do you cover it at all? Also, are you supposed to add oil, if so then how much for 2 cans of sauce? Thank you!
 
I always cover it because if you don't, when it boils it splashes all over the stove, and then you have a big mess to clean up. I don't add oil to it. If it's too thick, I'll add water to it.
