When cooking sloppy joes in a crock pot, is it okay to put the meat in raw?

I've done it before, but for this time I was wondering if it was okay to put the meat in frozen and raw as opposed to thawed and raw. Every recipe result I searched said the same thing: to cook the meat in a skillet and then put it in the crock pot with the other ingredients? Is this necessary?

It's fine to put the meat in raw as long as you are cooking it long enough to make sure it doesn't stay raw. The recipes are most likely saying that because they want you to brown the beef. However, that is not relevant with sloppy joes because of the sauce.

The ground beef has a higher fat ratio than other meats that you might do in a crock pot. The fat cooking out may leave your sloppy joe mixture a bit greasy.
I would brown the ground beef first drain it then put all your ingredients in the crock pot.

Well, we usually put an entire roast in there raw, right?

When I make Sloppy Joe's, it's on the stove-top. I brown the meat, drain off the grease (which you wouldn't be able to in a crock pot) and add ketchup (2 parts), yellow mustard (1 part) and A-1 Sauce (1 part). Stir, let simmer a couple minutes, and it's ready. I have never thought about putting it in a crock pot, because it's done in about 20 minutes.
