When chaining your bike, what is the most effective way ?

Ive just bought a new bike and a decent chain, what is the best way to use the chain ie where on the bike would you pass the chain through ? I was thinking through the rear wheel. Thanks for your input,
 
Chain it to a hungry Dog or a Jehovah's witness....you should be safe then.
Failing that then through the main frame and around something solid like a streetlight.
 
yes,you've got it...through the rear wheel..and if possible always chain it to something solid.
