When can you take a pregnancy test if your periods are NEVER the same?

My periods are so irregular that I have skipped a month once or twice before. But now my husband and I are TTC #1. My menstrual cycle is absolutely never on the same day. I've never been on birth control, so it hasn't effected when I am "supposed" to start. So, should I just wait and see if I skip the month completely??
