I would not add fish for at least a week. Take the time to cycle your tank right so your fish will be happy. I would not use the filter media he had i would get a new one. Get a test kit and read up on how to properly cycle a tank. When your tank is cycled then slowly add your fish I would add no more than 3 a day for mollies.

a couple days ago i bought a used 55 gallon tank off of craigslist. he used it for turtles and fish combined. he gave me the filter, heater, etc. he said his turtles made a mess and clogged up the filter but that he cleaned it, he gave me his old carbon filter thing from when he used the tank so it has the bacteria as does the gravel he gave me. im also using gravel from my two used ten gallons. so once i put the water in with the water conditioner and all that when can i get fish and put my current fish in there (mollies. thank you
