When biking outdoors, do I go for harder resistance or more spinning?

Which would be more beneficial?

I'm going for a cardio style work out.

But I hear you need the more muscle to burn more calories.

What is your advice?

I also have a bowflex so do I lift on the bowflex and do cardio on the bike? But bowflex is all upper and no lower so I would think I need the resistance on the bike as well?
