when am i supposed to know my baby's sex?

I am 11 weeks pregnant and like all im anxious to find out boy or girl... my sister and i both have the same obgyn and she didn't find out until she was 20 weeks prego with the first actual ultrasound. I thought they could do blood test before then or something. so when will they be able to determine my babies sex
