When Adam hides from God, why does God ask him "where art thou?". Isn't he supposed...

...to know?
And then God askes Adama another question, and then another, and then he asks Eve another question. The answers eventually lead him to the serpent. So it seems likes He's trying to figure out the ultimate culprit. In that case they are clearly not rhetorical questions.

The question is rhetorical and could have been taken to mean, "Where is your head, Adam? What's the matter with you.?" Have you lost your mind?"
I don't mean this humorously.

They don't call, they don't e-mail, and they rarely write....God and Adam, lost track of each other for a time or two there.

Nothing to be concerned about....They both know.
All is well with All-that-is.

Of course God knew where Adam and his wife Eve were. Adam may not have understood that God saw everything he did. Sometimes we fool ourselves in the same way, thinking that God doesn't see what we are doing.

Well of course, God knew. But most of all God wanted Adam to come out of hiding! The heart that hides... is in a saddened state somehow...Haven't you ever tried to touch a heart that is hiding, and felt the grief therein? I have, and in my walk towards this kind of heart, I have called ... hoping only to hear the response ... of a willingness to come out of hiding. Blessings...

He did know.
Ever heard of a rhetorical question? God was giving Adam a false sense of security, but also showing that Adam couldn't hide from him. God wanted Adam to reveal himself, which he did, instead of suddenly appearing to him.

Aside from Adam and God being separated for the first time, He asked it because He wanted to get Adam to think. He wanted Adam to figure out where He was spiritually. It's like how I ask my son "what is the answer to this question" on his homework, even though I already know the answer, I want him to figure it out for himself.

when i come home,
i know that my pet is in the room ...

yet, i will call out to him ...
where are you, love ..
knowing exactly where he is.

Its just like when i sneak up behind you and have you dead in the sights and about to pull the trigger .. its just for laughs. 'Where you at?' BAM! ... just about the time you turn around and i see that ohshit look on your face lol.
