When a Stranger Calls

I have just seen a trailer for the above movie, I was just wondering is this supposed to be a horror movie or a comedy? The trailer/voice over makes it look like a horror, but the acting in it makes it look like a spoof (seriously)

i've saw this and well i thought it was rotten, waiting all the film for something to happen and it was all rushed into like the last 15mins
its supposed to be a horror but i shook my head all the way thru at it

I have seen the trailer for this and it just looks like any other cheesy horror film with no originality at all. The acting also looked like it was terrible but if I remember right it was number 1 in the US box office when it was released over there but that isnt saying much!

I have also seen the trailer but it just looks like a ripoff from the movie Scream. So i am going to see it when it comes out on sky movies.

I saw the original version - way back in the early 80s - with Carol Kane and Charles Durning.
It was in the days when the cinemas showed you a warm-up movie before the main feature - WASC was the warm-up for something else (can't remember what) - and was FAR better than the main feature.

A really gripping movie in places, I still rate it as one of my faves, and I'm dreading seeing the remake.
Very few remakes do justice to the original - and judging from the trailer, this won't be any different.
Hope I'm wrong - but I'm not optimistic.

I saw it a few months back. I'd say it was a decent enough thriller with a few jumpy moments. Mainly suspense based until the last 20 mins or so.

Definetly worth a viewing though imo.

the original made at the end of the 70s is a classic in a way. the beginning of SCREAM was based on it and its the one horrorn film they don't actually mention.

the first 20 mins with the babysitter being menaced by obscene phonecalls is terrifying (well it was at the time), the story then wanders all over the place and becomes a police procedural thriller before getting scaryt again at the end.

this remake has taken the first 20 mins of the original and stretched it to a 90 min film.

and yes the girl's acting even in the trailer is atrocious

The trailer is embarassing, they tell you he's making the calls from upstairs so when you come to watch it there's no suspense at all as we know what's going to happen. The acting is certainly atrocious. It's just embarassing.

PJ68 is right, original movie from 1979 or so with Carol Kane as the babysitter. The first 20 mins are often remembered as some of the most terrifying and suspenseful in cinema. Keep in mind, back then there were no mobile phones, or the technology we have today, and babysitting was still a pretty common and mostly worry free position for young girls.

I dont know why they did a remake, although I am not one of these anti remake people, it still just doesn't lend itself to a remake of that type of film. Doesn't every young girl have a cell phone and pager these days or some way to communicate? Anyway, not sure it did well here..

I saw the trailer a while ago and thought it looked good. Does anyone know who the girl is in it, i don't recognise her from anything else?

Quite possibly the worst film I have ever seen. NOTHING happens for the first hour apart from the phone which keeps ringing (why does she keep answering the bloody thing? It's not even her house!) You keep waiting for something to happen, but nothing does.

Then the last 20 minutes has all the "action" which is about as scary as Balamory.

Really, really bad. One to aviod. I have no idea how this made it to the cinema.
