When a 2000 Jeep Cherokee takes atleast 3 tries to start what could it mean?

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L V6. When I go to start it it takes about 3 tries for it to actually start. I have tried turning it and leaving it on right before i try to start it but it doesnt seem to help. I just replaced the battery in it and that didnt help. Some people say it needs a new fuel pump, others say new spark plugs.. anyone have any ideas?
not v6--6 cylinder !!!! oops
 
first of all is the van diesel you need to turn the ignition on for a while for the plugs to heat up. if gas pump the gas two times then start and see if that helps
