Whats your honest opinion/advice for me? Please read + answer :)?

I catch him looking up at me sometimes in form or at breaks and he sometimes looks at me in the eye for a second or looks straight down. Also, I came back after a weeks holiday a few days ago and he was in a classroom with another girl working on an assignment. I was standing outside the door (didn’t know he was in there), and I turned around to look inside and found him staring right at me.
A day later, we had an excursion which he wasn't on and we got back just before school was over, he spotted me coming down the hall, smiled and looked at me. I hugged my friends goodbye and turned around to find him still looking at me and smiling.
He also talked to me a few weeks ago on two occasions, the first he started when I was jokingly asking a girl if she could do an assignment for me. He looked up from his bag and said 'Is that the Media one?' and I replied 'Yeah'. He then said 'I'm getting that next I think' and I said 'The teacher said there's apparently more that meets the eye with it'. I went away and came back after school, saw him there and asked 'You get the assignment then?' He said 'Yeah, more that meets the eye with the Media assignment' we both laughed and then we went.
His friends also make strange comments when I'm around such as 'Were we interrupting something?' when I walked away after the first conversation above. Also, his friend asked him about something he said in the last class and he replied 'It can wait until later' when I was next to him at my bag. His friend then replied 'No it can't' and started to laugh. One of his friends knows I like him but doesn't really tell me much plus he always confuses me, as things he does say about him sometimes sound like he could or could not like me.
What do think? WHAT SHOULD I DO!? I really like him too but we are both pretty shy and don't really know how to make conversation
