What's your favorite old English book and with the author?

I'm looking for some really good books that was created by an old english writer. Someone like Jane Austen, J.M. Barrie or Hans Christian Andersen. Please reccomend some of your favorite. Could be romance, adventure or very sad and bitterseet. Thank you for all who answered.^_^
P.S. Could you include tell me what it is about as well.
