What's wrong with outdoor dogs?

Why are people so quick to condemn outdoor dogs as "bad?" Not all outdoor dogs have a bad life.

I have a pack of terriers that I keep in a pen outside. They're purely working dogs that have never been inside, ever. But that doesn't mean their life is terrible, or that they're miserable animals left alone all day.

I take my dogs for a 1 hour walk in the woods everyday. I take them hunting and compete with them in terrier racing, earthdog, obedience, and agility. On the weekends they go to dog parks.

In another pen I have 2 German Shepherds who also stay outside all the time. They work too and are very well trained, competing in agility and obedience.

My only indoor dogs are two "retired" dogs, a 16 yr old JRT and a 13 yr old Mini Schnauzer. They had a hard time adjusting to living inside and still prefer being outside.

So, my question is, what's wrong with outdoor dogs? If they're working animals they belong outside anyway, don't they? And if you're willing to spend the time training them and taking care of them, then why can't they live outside? They're happier outside anyway.

Outside - fine. In a cage - bad. Most people see dogs as part of their families. Would you put Aunt Hazel in a cage?

What's wrong with outdoor dogs? Nothing. Provided they get plenty of attention, exercise, training, vet care, food, water, and shelter. But you already knew that. ;-)
