Whats wrong with my Honda Civic 2001 DX it dropped acceleration and wont start?

last thursday a buddy of mine uses my car and tells me that it didn't accelerate form him all of the sudden a couple time and that he pulled over and restarted the car and all was dandy. today the same thing happened to me, check engine light came on and it wouldn't accelerate not turn off but just not accelerate when i pulled over tried to turn it on it rumbled and would not start but it made an attempt to do so. called a tow truck got home and then an hour later tried to start i and after a bit it turned one without any of the problems from before. anyone have any idea what this could be, any advice is appreciated?
 
I'd use some common sense here and have a reputable repair facility have a look at it. If the check engine light came on then went off, the facility would have decent diagnosis equipment that can retrieve pending codes. Once that is narrowed down, you can focus on that. Could be hundreds if not thousands of things causing this such as a bad distributor to sensors to fuel pressure issues and more, hope that helped you narrow it down.
