sounds like a cylinder miss fire, most common cause would be a bad plug wire, spark plug or an ignition coil, you don,t need to tear it down to check that, i would try a different shop, most places have a fee to check it but it shouldn't be any more that their labor rate per hour, ours is 70.00 but we never really charge to check it here.
