What's wrong with my bicycle?

I inherited a mountain-bike and it's pretty cool but whenever I push serious torque on the pedals or stand up and try to go fast on it, the chain slips out of the top speed into the next lower speed. I think it's because the teeth on the gears are worn BUT I know nothing about bikes. Could there be other reasons it's doing this?

What's the most likely cause and would replacing the gears/sprocket(s) etc. most likely resolve the problem?

there could be a problem with the rear derailleur. the cable might have stretched or slipped slightly so the gears skip. but more than likely the cassette is worn. a new one will solve this problem. however, you will need a chain whip tool, cassette tool and the right size spanner for said tool, plus a new cassette. together you are looking at about £30 if you get a cheap cassette on ebay
