What's wrong with my air filter on my fish tank?

Okay, so I recently received a goldfish for a Christmas present. The tank that I got has an air filter. It worked nicely for a few days, but then it started like blowing a TON of bubbles. LIke not a normal amount. And the bubbles started coming out of the tank. Like overflowing. So I turned it off for a while till the bubbles went down and then turned it back on. But my fish needs it, ya know? He's getting sick though. Like he keeps going up to the surface of the water and opening and closing his mouth like he's trying to get oxygen, then goes underwater and tries to use his gills and air bubbles come out of his mouth. Then he freaks out and swims into everything and repeats again and again. But then he found some food that he didn't eat when I fed him earlier and ate it. Then did the breathing thing, except when he went underwater, he just like spit out the food along with the air bubbles. I guess he was throwing up? But yeah, he keeps doing that, and I don't know what to do, but I don't want him to die. He looks like he's in a lot of pain and struggling so much. I don't know how to help the poor little guy though.
