What's wrong with my 1996 Ford Taurus?

My car is using oil. Im 1k miles over my 3k mile oil change. The oil is at the "add1 quart" line. I want to know why my car is using oil. Is it bad that my car is using oil? How much would I be looking at to fix it? I know I need to replace my Oxygen sensor, but I dunno if that has anything to do with my oil.
 
Add a quart and see, if it drops noticeably within a short period of time Then
It could be that a head gasket is on its way out.
Blue smoke from the exhaust when revving or accellerating would be a clear indication of this and should be checked out

It could be worn valve guides and numerous other things, But head gasket is more common occurence.

Oxygen sensor is just for fuelling I think, nothing to do with oil.
 
The way I read this, is you have used, or leaked one quart of oil in 4000 miles, well, either way, burning or leak, it's nothing to worry about.
For almost any engine to use a quart in 4000 miles is not excessive.
