What's wrong with Flash Player?

I've tried everything to get this working, I've followed the instructions on Adobe Flash player help page to the letter. I've uninstalled it and re-installed it a million times and it still doesn't work.
Can anyone help me get it working?
I'm using windows XP and Internet Explorer (although I've tried it with Firefox too).
