Early this morning it rained a little. Then it sounded as though there was hail smacking my window. When I got up to look, it wasn't even raining anymore, and it certainly was not hailing. My Heating unit is right outside my window, and was the source of the noise. I turned it down quite a bit, so that it didn't come back on for hours. When it finally did, it made this terrible screeching noise. The only comparable sound I can think of is when you re-start a car that is already started. After the initial noise it made coming on however, there were no more odd sounds. (At least not that I can hear from inside.) Is this even safe? Should I turn it off completely?
The unit is at least 10 years old, maybe 20.

Not sure what your unit is, but it sounds like a Heat Pump. If so, the outside portion of a Heat Pump has a fan with a motor. Most fans are belt driven (like your car). Have it looked at.
