What's with all these remakes?

Beatlejuice, Robocop, Drop Dead Fred, Nightmare of Elm Street, now Short Circuit .... and many many more.

Is Hollywood that devoid of new ideas? And they'll never manage to better the originals. Frustrating, I for one won't be spending a penny on any of these remakes!

No one will top Rik Mayall in Drop Dead Fred, I do wish they wouldn't try. I'd heard they're planning a remake of Flight of the Navigator too. Pure and utter blasphemy.

Why can't these top Hollywood Execs think of some new stories?!

I also read somewhere that they're re-starting the Superman franchise from the beginning too soon - so why bother making the newer films? Why not just start again with it in the first instance?

What's with all the 'What's with all these remakes' topics? :p

I've not heard anything official on a Beetlejuice remake though... where did you get that information from?

Remakes have been around since the dawn of Cinema.

It is just that a lot of the current remakes are from your generation of growing up, you remember the original so well that to hear about a remake is awful for you.

This is not aimed at the OP, but people in general.

Personally for me, when I first heard about the 2004 Dawn of the Dead, I was horrified. But, I took time out to watch it and make my own decision. I really enjoyed it.
I still prefer the original, but this new version is a nice companion to it.

Some of these proposed remakes may in fact be better then their originals. Who knows! We should not be making judgement based on what we have not yet seen .

Hollywood have been remaking movies since day one,but never quite to this extent.Hollywood is basically one huge corporation anyway, usually relying on novels, indie filmmakers etc to keep in business,so it's hardly surprising.

At the start of the 80's,it was obvious sequels were the in-thing after the huge success of the Star Wars trilogy.By the 00's,sequels weren't really huge money makers anymore due to usually inferior sequels doing damage to recognizable branRAB - so enter the remake (or reboot as they are now called).

I haven't heard of an upcoming Beetlejuice remake but it wouldn't surprise me - it's another famouse character/brand.The Exorcist is apparently being "rebooted" as is the Scream series. The only movie(s) that definitely won't get the remake treatment is the aforementioned Star Wars.

I can easily imagine remakes of the likes of Jaws,Rosemary's Baby,Dirty Harry,Grease,Smokey & the Bandit etc. appearing within the next 10 years.

Personally,I just don't pay to see a remake (unless it's good) ;) Try before you buy.

i wasnt looking forward to the new Dawn of the Dead either - but i was pleasently surprised. i found it quite enjoyable - nothing special - it was just enjoyable. i wonder how long it will be before they remake the remake??!
I still havent seen the new Day of the Dead - but looking forward to it. i always thought the original was not all that great to begin with!

to me the Short Circuit remake is just painful to know. its one of my all time favourites!

just to be fair - there is a surge over the last couple of years of remakes - more then ever ever before.

it used to be within 40 - 50 years before they remade something - lately it is jsut been 10 - 15 years!

the "reboots" (Batman, Star Trek) seem to do better then the "remakes".

But - i want to know, why cant they simply just re-release the modern classics on the big screen?
I always remember in the 80s when Disney used to re-release all their older movies from the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.

Just to end this post - the new Short Circuit will be simply awful!!!!

Re-released movies will still look dated to some of the younger audience and probably won't lead to a bonanza in TV and merchandise rights (not to mention DVD sales).

I advise you Rincewind NOT to watch Day of the Dead (2008) - it is even worse than you could imagine!
I felt DOD (1985) was easily the weakest of Romero zombie trilogy but nothing could prepare you for how bad the remake is.

Thats just your opinion, unless you have a crystal ball or time machine to know for sure.
The main reason for this sudden rise in remakes is that films comapanies thow they can do a whole lot more now than they could back then.
So they look at some of the biggest films of yesteryear that made them lots of money and want to bring them back to a whole new audience making them look bigger and better than they did the 1st time around and wanting to make even more money than before.
Sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesnt, but it seems daft to flame it down until youve had the chance to actually see a remake once they have been made.

I'm not sure where. But I found out about when reading about the Drop Dead Fred remake, with Russel Brand in the Ric Mayle role, as Russel Brand is apparently in the running to play Beatlejuice.

Russel Brand is making me more angry then normal.

Before too long remakes will be made of films that are less then 5 years old, mark my worRAB! lol

And I agree, why dont they re-release modern classics on the big screen? Theres so many I'd love to see at the cinema again, or for the fist time. Terminator 2 being the prime example for me!

There is nothing official about the Beetlejuice remake, there was talk of a straight to dvd sequel a few years ago, but nothing concrete since, hopefully Brand is talking out of his arse.

If Russell Brand gets anywhere near Beetlejuice I will be serving a life sentance. I am a huge Beetlejuce fan and have not heard anything other than what you are saying about a remake.

I know a few years ago both Tim Burton and Michael Keaton were interested in doing a sequel, and from what I remember it almost happened as Tim Burton had completed the script, but then he chose to stick with making POTC films. So hopefuly the talk of another film is just referring to a possible sequel, and the fools coming up with all kinRAB of crap.

The only thing Beetlejuice neeRAB is a sequel with Michael Keaton and Tim Burton returning, and hopefully as much of the original cast as possible.

Russel Brand? If he get's anywhere near Drop Dead Fred or Beetlejuice I will cry, and probably send him and whatever movie studios make the films (probably Warner Bros. and Universal) strong worded mail over it. Blasphemous.

A lot of the films they are remaking could actually be benefitted by a decent sequel rather than having to remake the whole thing. Are Warner Bros. gonna keep doing Superman movies until one becomes as successful as The Dark Knight?

I think this is one of the problems. Studio execs think better SFX=better movies. Someone really neeRAB to tell them that better stories=better movies.

The writers strike last year tells us everything of how the industry regarRAB their writing talent. They're not important, you see, because big explosions and CGI-everything is what the public wants in a movie.

They might as well get it over with and remake The Phantom Mencace - cutting out everything but Jar Jar Binks. Have him farting explosions in slow-motion bullet time and you've all the ingredients of a successful movie.

Oh and Michael Bay should direct it.
