Whats up with my car's airbags?

I drive a 2005 2-door coupe Ford Focus. When I drive with a passenger in the front seat, a light will occasionally come on that says "Passenger Air Bag turned off." It's right below my emergency lights button.

Why does the air bag turn off if there is someone sitting in the seat? Isn't that really dangerous?

Who knows something about Ford Focuses?

The sensor is set up to turn the airbag off if there is no one sitting it the seat or if the person in the seat doesn't weight enough for the airbag to be effective.

That's controlled by a switch in the passenger seat; maybe your passenger is too light to activate it, or is sitting in such a way that he/she doesn't hit it.
