it's about a girl in a English colony who's been married of (via arranged marraige) to an abusive husband who dies after she wishes ill will on him. the girl befriends a seemingly mad man who turns out to be just deaf, and is tried as a witch because of her new friendship & her husbands death. her hands are burned with a hot iron rod & sealed (the way they heal determines her fate). in the end, her hands heal correctly, & she elopes with the deaf guy after they find some prized ring in the chimeny. the book's historical fiction and the cover is a picture of the girl staring out a window & she has brown curly hair.
