whats the story behind (The Art of Fugue ) by J.S.Bach, why that important ?

The art of the fugue considered one of the most important works by j.s.bach , well, I listened to it a lot, the melody is too simple , but its complicity comes from the variety of repeating the melody lines in different instruments and in different time entries …
Any more comments can help me understand better the importance of it??????
