If you want 'scary moments' then the Halloween films are probably what you're looking for.
The most psychologically disturbing film I have seen is The Shining. This is is really the stuff of nightmares. Still not fully sure what's happening in some scenes. Is it all in Jack's mind, are they dreams, hauntings, something caused by the boy? Well worth watching any way.

Agree with a lot of what has been said.
That bedroon scene in Poltergeist where everything is spinning around and you can see the terror in the eyes of those who are witnessing it, kept me petrified for weeks!
But the films that I can recall making a real buzz when they were released were The Exorcist, Salem's Lot (TV), The Omen and Poltergeist. Oh and let's not forget who didn't want to go to slpepe after seeing a Nightmare in Elm Street?

I read somewhere that The Shining was supposed to be a spoof/ or tongue in cheek - but I watched it as a straight scary film, so that comment came as a surprise to me. It always scares me

It is partly inspired by EC Comics though so there is an element of black humour in The Shining.
Would that be the bit where he utters the immortal line "I didn't mean to call you Meatloaf Jack...?" I will never forget that moment!
The underground scene is evil - for the same reason that the film 'Creep' is to me. Werewolves and evil/deranged experiments gone wrong aside, what American Werewolf in London and Creep bring home to you is just how vulnerable you really are catching the last Tube home or being in the Underground on your own that time of night. If it is an unmanned train station anywhere else, likewise!
As for those dream sequences - they made me jump out of my flesh too when I first saw them.
Classic film though.
