what's the safest way to purchase a car in this recession?

ok im 17 a high school graduate and im moving into an apartment in about a month with my roommate and i dnt really have family to help me with some of my necessities....i have money and im aware u have to be at least 18 to purchase a car i dnt make 18 until late december...i start school in august what should i do?
