Whats the right way to turn off the wii?

I hold down the power button on the system and it then turns yellow...I left it yellow but then when i got back home it was burning up....however I found that when I hold it till it turns red its completly shut down. Whats the correct way to turn it off? what does yellow mean? is it best to just shut it off with wiimote?
 
mines warm with connect24 on, but not burning up. it doesn't get any warmer than my tivo, dsl modem, router, etc

i have it in the vertical stand, that might make a difference
 
i dont get connect 24? i mean whats the point of it? i would rather it not be warm at all and just power it on. The turn on from red to green cant be any slower than from yellow to green? or am i missing something here?
