What's the purpose of the squat angled speakers that musicians have in front

of them on stage? Why do musicians have those speakers sitting in front of them that point right back at them?

I used to think it was to hear the rest of the band but am not so sure any more. I've sat in many a rowdy hall where the band had nothing but mikes in front of them. I've also seen several times where a guy and a guitar are on stage alone with one of those speakers in front of him.
