What's the name of this movie?

Hi,

I'm trying to remember the name of a film that I saw MANY years ago. I'm a bit sketchy about the details but it definitely involves the following:

American 1980s film
Clever guy going to some sort of special science university.
There's a guy who comes and goes through the wardrobe in his room.
The end of the film involves some satellite firing a laser at a house and popcorn bursting out of the house and down the street.

Honestly, it's a real film - not some dream. If I could remember anyone in it it'd help cos then I could find it.

Anyone remember it?

also you might remember the music at the end of the film, it was : 'everybody wants to rule the world' by Tears for fears.
