1974-texas chainsaw&black xmas
1978-halloween
1980-the shining&friday the 13th{the 80s i know but ill include it:D}

all classics all memerable to the average person and all within one decade

of course the 80s gave us
1984-nightmare on elm street
1982-friday the 13th part 3(jasons iconic 1st ever apperance)
1987-hellraiser
1988-chilRAB play

i think the 90s was the period were horror waned out abit didt it? till scream of course but anything after that was not really memorable
1991-silence of the lambs
1996-scream
1999-sixth sence
did i miss anything?

and from the 00s i think most films dont get that status anymore IMO but id probly go with
2002-ring
2004-saw

I'd say the films that had the biggest impact in each decade were

20s - Nosferatu, The Phantom Of The Opera, The Cat & The Canary

30s - Dracula (Tod Browning), Frankenstein (James Whale), Freaks, The Mummy, White Zombie, The Invisible Man, Bride Of Frankenstein, King Kong

40s - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Wolf Man, The Beast With Five Fingers

50s - Them!, Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers, The Fly

60s - Psycho, Day Of The TriffiRAB, The BirRAB, The Haunting, Night Of The Living Dead, Rosemary's Baby, Witchfinder General

70s - Dawn Of The Dead, The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Wicker Man, The Omen, Jaws, Halloween, Alien

80s - The Shining, An American Werewolf In London, Evil Dead, Friday The 13th, Poltergeist, The Thing, A Nightmare On Elm Street, The Fly, Hellraiser

90s - Misery, The Silence Of The Lambs, Scream, Ringu, The Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense, Seven

2000s - err.... um.... Let The Right One In?

For the 2000's I'd say:

Saw - created a money spinning franchise and features iconic elements. It also popularized "torture porn" - AKA mainstream extreme cinema seen in Hostel,Pathology and Captivity.

The Ring - Very financially successful remake led to dozens more remakes produced in a similar way.

28 Days Later - Not a zombie movie as such but it did revive the genre.

Final Destination - Carried on the franchise horror,as well as horror aimed towarRAB and centred around teens.

House of 1,000 Corpses - Brought back the nasty, gore filled 1970's style hardcore horror movie. That sub-genre was continued with Wrong Turn,Wolf Creek and Devil's Rejects.

1920s - Nosferatu.

1930s and 40s - Universal Pictures monster movies.

1950s - The B-movie.

1960s - Hammer Horror.

1970s - Satanic thrillers, the birth of the slasher.

1980s - The era of slashers, Hellraiser, and a Nightmare on Elm Street.

1990s - Postmodern horror.

2000s - Torture porn.

On balance, I'd say the 80s were the best decade for iconic horror.

I don't think I saw the original 'The Cat and the Canary', I only remember the Bob Hope version that completely spooked me out.

And this was made 71 years ago? Cripes

70'S - Halloween, I Spit On Your Grave
80's - Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday 13th
90's - Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer
00's - Saw, Final Desitnation

Also The Exorcist, The Shining (although it's dreadful and The Chainsaw Massacure and Canniabel Hasslicorse But i forgot when they came out.

This post just about covered it but, love it or hate it, the Saw franshise will become iconic of the noughties.

What do you think we have to expect from the 10s? I think Scream 4 will bring about another return of the slasher genre, much like the first scream did in the 90s.

Agree with Revolver44's list - very good.

It's a shame that the last decade has not really been very original or creative. Ok, the Saw franchise was a good idea to start with, so I'd put the first movie in the list for the 00's. Otherwise you have to look elsewhere for good shocks - Ju-On from Japan, The Host from Korea. Or you go for laughs like Shaun of the Dead (but, er, not Scary Movie.)

but is the slasher genre gone away i dont think it has we have had
halloween-2007
my bloody valentine-2009
halloween 2-2009
friday the 13th-2009
nightmare on elm street-2010

all slasher movies and all done incredibliy well in BO. remakes yes but still slashers

my bloody valentine is my favourite slasher movie of the last 10 years its a great movie definatly better than the rebooted friday, nightmare, halloween franchises

Revolver44 list is pretty much spot on but for the Naughties I would include:

Saw, Hostel, Wolf Creek, The Hills Have Eyes, Silent Hill, Jeepers Creepers, The Descent
