Whats the difference between themes and subject matter in art?

A theme is something that the entire piece focus on--a mood or subject such as "family" or "togetherness."

Subject matter is the actual character or object focused on. Such as a the actual family in the picture. NOT their feelings or emotions... or the feel of the picture.

Does that help?

The Theme is what you base your piece on like the theme may be landscape or the streets or love .. The subject matter is what you make it out of like clay or recycled garbage or paper mache.
