I am studying materials science as part of an engineering qualification and I have to research different methods of materials testing. I have found the Izod and Charpy impact tests and I want to check I have got them both right.
The only difference I can see between them is the way that the materials are clamped in each - Charpy method clamps them at either side and the material is hit in the middle whilst in the Izod method, the material is clamped at the bottom, hit in the middle and left free at the top. Is this right?
Also, do both methods involve notching the material?
