What's the difference between SQ and SPL when dealing with car audio? What are...

SPL - Sound pressure Level
SQ - Sound Quality

If you buy a SPL subwoofer, it will be loud as F*ck and most likely be suited to a Ported/vented enclosure.

if you buy a SQ Subwoofer, it will still be loud, have a fast bass response and take up less space, you'll want this in a sealed enclosure.

Or, You can buy a SPL/SQ Subwoofer which is good for both, Such as the Alpine Type R subwoofer or JL W7 13, You can put these in a sealed or ported/vented box. Remember ported box will take up much more space, the bass will be louder, slow bass response however the low's will hit hard. Putting it in a sealed box will take up less space, have a fast bass response, Sound better, and still be loud. Both boxes are good and its just personal preference, Personally I don't really mind if i get a ported or sealed box as long as they're the correct sizes for the subwoofer, heck you can get one of those boxes that has a removable sealed panel so its basically a two in one.

EDIT: Forgot to mention some companies

Alpine - SQ + SPL, Mainly SPL.
Infinity - SQ Based, very good subwoofers.
Kicker - SPL
Pioneer - SPL but with good SQ.
Fi Audio - SPL with a SQ Range
JL - SQ + SPL, two in one. (can be expensive).
MTX - SPL.
Rockford fosgate - Spl + SQ

If your wanting to buy a good reliable subwoofer, good in both, Go for the Alpine Type R, or if your on a budget Pioneers are pretty good, Also take a look at Hifonic Amplifiers, they make solid reliable amplifiers for many subwoofer setups.

Good Luck!
