A jail is a construct built to hold someone for the police. It is usually part of a police station.
A prison is a whole building or complex devoted to keeping prisoners away from society. It is run by a devoted staff headed by a warden and guards (people who are specially trained to keep prisoners in and to prevent them from hurting each other).
Solitary confinement is any small area maintained by pretty much anyone (it is frequently used in the military as well) for preventing a prisoner from seeing or talking with anyone else. Prisons tend to have some method of solitary confinement. Police stations with jails do not.
jail is mostly for short term and lesser crimes but prison is for big crimes like murder and rape and solitary confinement is where the worst of the worst go to in prison when they commit crimes in prison like if your in prison and you murder someone when your in there they send you to solitary confinement and your in a cell 23 and a half hours a day and you never go outside and you get no privleges what so ever

Jail and prison tend to be used as synonyms but in my state I think jails are usually local facilities and prisons are larger state or federal lockups. Solitary confinement can be used at any level for prisoners who must be removed from the general population for discipline or safety reasons.
