Whats the deal with these 12 inch kicker 2008 l7's?!?

Alright, so I have two 2008 kicker l7 12s. They are both being pushed by a hifonics HFi2000w mono D amp. I've heard a lot of hype that kickers are good subs, they can be over powered, so on and so forth. So when I run them at 1 ohm, i can almost instantly smell the subs. Not actually burning, but definitely smell them. I really don't understand, because I mean, the amp is only pushing about 1800 rms, and that only over pushes the subs 150rms a piece. I guess what i'm asking, is why the hell are these subs doing that? Does my pair just suck, or is this common and how bad is it for them? Otherwise, I run them at 4 ohm and it is sad to have to listen to them so quiet in comparison. Any thought, insight, or help would be awesome. On a side note, what should I do with the gain/boost/phase to set them? I run the gain full, boost slightly up, and the phase at about 20hz (15-35 is the range on the phase) Please help lol.
