I've been seeing more and more people riding them and they look really cool. I've also been watching videos on youtube and it looks like you can do some really awesome tricks on them. I wanna get into it but I'm not really sure. Can anyone fill me in?

The only problem with g-man's answer is he is wrong. There is a category in many races including Calvin's Challenge specifically for single speed bikes. Calvin's Challenge is a 12 race and the current record is over 200 miles for single speeds. Hmm, there goes the not for long distance myth. There are many single speed riders that use them on the hills. Yes it is harder and takes technique to get up the biggest inclines. Myth 2 busted.

Single speeds are cool for their simplicity and the challenge of riding them where ever you would ride a multi-gear bike. The same reason some competitors like Iron Man events.
