What's the best way to get stronger on a bike?

I live 15 miles from the nearest town and I know that a lot of kids bike about that length sometimes to get to town. I was thinking about it, and I decided that I'm going to get myself to commonly bike to town and do whatever I was going to do when I get there. I could maybe bike that far right now (I've never tried to bike any distance before), but I want to be able to do that in as short amount of time and to not get insanely burned-out. So, I've decided that I need to get fit.
I want to know what would be the easiest and fastest way to get fit. But keep in mind that by "easy" I mean that I don't want to have to like buy some fancy stuff or something, not that I'm not willing to lie on the side of the road, puking. I want to push myself as hard as possible.
What I mean is stuff like, "What should I eat?" "How fast should I go to train for 15 miles and over?" "How should I space brakes and such?"
Also, I have two bikes. I think one is an 18speed and the other is very old and I'm not sure what all it can do, but I have noticed that it's easier to go fast on the old bike than the new one and I'd like to know if I could re-set the speed somehow to change that because I've never really messed with the speeds.
And I was wondering if temperature effected anything...? (I live in a very cold area, and I know that -20 was horrible for anything because the cold air is bad for your lungs, but what about 40 or 50 or 60?)
And, since I live in a rural area with 6inch shoulders on the road past the white line, would going at night be a good or bad idea?
Lastly, I'm not very big. (5'2'' and about 125lbs)
