Whats the best way to boost my router signal?

I live in a pretty long apartment. I cant seem to get wifi coverage in my living room. How can i boost this signal? I see that there are literally dozens of different wifi boosters available... From Netgear to Hawking... etc... Which one will work effectively? I am also looking for a cheap option (under $50)...

I cant nail the extender to the wall, but it IS on the floor. there is really no slack for the wires..
