What's the best way, and best time to view the Orion Nebula?

I have an 8" sct (c8). If I go way out into the country, to a good dark sky, during the months of December, January, or February will I be able to see some of the wild colors of the Orion nebula. Will I need a filter, or more aperture, or will I get good views with just my scope????????
Tina: Thanks and yes, I've already seen Orion a couple of times, at about 4 in the morning, but as you said, I saw no color. So, I'm wondering, If I get a nebula filter and wait til prime Orion viewing months, which I think are January and February, will I see any color then?
