What's the best type of bike to get to ride around Honolulu?

I just want to get a cheap bike to ride to class and what not around the city. I've seen some decent mountain bikes at Walmart for like $120. I don't really like those bikes with the curved handles and thin wheels, but are those better for street riding? Would a mountain bike be ok?

There's no such thing as a "decent Walmart bike".

Get a hybrid bike (used is fine - just check for rust). If you want new, there's a pretty good bike store near Ala Moana, called the Bike Factory (there are a few others, nearby). Check 'em out.

The terrain is pretty flat, so it won't be hard to ride. I'd get wide, semi slick tires. They'll have less rolling resistance ans smooth any bumps (esp going off the curbs).

A mountain bike is fine (hard tail, not FS), but stay with the semi slicks for the streets, knobbies are harder to pedal & wear out too fast on pavement. I commute with a hard tail bike every day.
