Whats the best product or technique to use to get rust off aluminum bike rims?

We got a bike given to us by some friends, they bought the bike brand new last year. Its a mountain bike. Its a very nice bike, however they left it outside the entire winter in Minnesota. So the rims are rusted and some of the screws and joints. I want to take the rust off. What is the safest, yet most effective product? I heard Whink works wonders on household stuff like tubs and sinks. Does it work in this case too?

First of all, Aluminum shouldn't rust. Only steel will rust. For that, use a product called Naval Jelly, at your hardware store.

True!! Aluminium does'nt rust! It may corrode though! a bit of elbow grease and steel wool..clean it up and apply a smear of petroleum jelly/Vaseline to the clean surface. finding a more sheltered place for your valuable bike might save you the trouble of repeating the exercise! :)
