What's the best place to go camping in or near Southern California in October?

We want to get away from crowds and into the wilderness, preferable somewhere where we can have a back-country campfire, but not necessary because I don't know if anywhere allows that... A friend and I want to spend about 4 days in nature writing music and camping.

Try Lake Cachuma just north of Santa Maria. We like to camp by the water. Campfires are allowed and the lake is great.
