What's the best jeep for me? And what should I watch out for?

First off, I want a 4x4. It's primarily an onroad vehicle, but I'll be going to school in the central coast (California), so I'm going to be offroading and driving on the beach at pismo a little bit too.

My budget limit is between $4000 and $5000. It's going to have to get me through school the next three or four years, so it needs to be dependable. I prefer a v8 but I suppose I could deal with a v6.

Any suggestions from the previous jeep owners out there?

P.S. I don't care if it's a wrangler, liberty, or cherokee as long as it serves my needs.

With your budget two of the best buys on the Jeep market today are the !996 thru 2001 4x4 Cherokees and Grand Cherokees. Both are dependable (if not previously abused) and great for on road and off.

The XJ Cherokee will have the very dependable 4.0L straight six engine and most often automatic transmission (although a few 5 spd. manuals are out there).

The Grand Cherokee will have the same 4.0L Six or the 318 V8..also with automatic (only).

Good luck.

im not really a jeep expert but form what i no about them, u should try and get one thats older than a 1997 becuz i think thats when they changed engine types. i think the new ones aren't supposed to be as good. me personally i like the 1996 cherokee. i would make sure u look up when the engine type changes. from what i remember its the straight 6 thats supposed to be the good engine. good luck and have lots of fun in whatever u get!
