whats the best defense against lose dogs while out fishing?

Last week, I was out fishing at a stream when this huge dog (That should have been on a leash) bolted away from it's owner, crossed a small crossing point some yards away and charged me.....I'm thinking either 9mm, pellet pistol, dog pepper spray...! Any serious advice for personal protection in such a situation in the future?
 
Was this stream private property. If it was not then the dog should have been on a leash. However, it seems you were not injured so no biggie. Had you shot the dog, it would be you in serious trouble. If you are scared, carry mace or something. And it is "loose" not "lose".
