Whats the best 1st time car to buy?

i recently passed my driving test and am looking for a car (obviously) i was wondering what the cheapest would be taking insurance ratings, engine size and so on into account. the ones that keep coming up are corsas, puntos an clios but i dont know what model and year of those cars people are talking about when they're saying they are the cheapest cars to run. any tips on how to reduce insurance quotes and so on would also be appreciated.

If your in the UK anything over a 1.0L engine will cost you a mint to insure , I know a 17 year old who got a 1.4 fiesta and insurance wanted £2500 !!! The car was only worth £800

I'd hate to be at the start of my driving career right now , I'm now 40 and pay £450 fully comp , protected NCB for the pleasure of driving a very nice coupe
