What's that book about very minor events in the history of the English language?

I was once reading something—can't possibly remember what, possibly wikipedia—when I saw a reference to a book or something about insignificant events in the development of the english language. It didn't seem that serious, and had obviously fictional conversation, yet was professional, if I remember correctly. I recall an example about a person walking into a bar and asking for something, and the bartender didn't understand what they were asking for, illustrating that a word had changed or something like that.

I've tried searching the web to no avail. My memory could be fuzzy about the whole thing. Any clue what I'm thinking of?
It was about the language's development hundreds of years ago. I'm looking for a specific book, not really the information about English.
