It seems like all rappers "talk" about is themselves. How much money they have, how much gold they have, how cool their cars are and how many women they have. They don't even sing. Kanye West was bragging about how he felt he was the voice of this generation and how he was much more relevant than people like Justin Temberlake. Then he went out and sucked on SNL. I just wonder if rappers give americans a bad image. Do people in other countries look at rappers and think that is how most americans are? Self centered and only thinking about themselves?
The Next Time: Ah.....what?

Not all rap music is like that. There is some that discusses more profound issues, and has positive messages. But yes, most mainstream rap music is a bunch of bragging. But it' does have it's own purpose...

Mainstream rap is pretty much just like commercials. They talk about all the material things and women they have acquired, which in turn makes their fans desire those same things. So, in turn, the fans try to emulate these images in their own lives, and many times will go to desperate measures to achieve these petty goals.

We all need money to survive, but the rap scene that you discuss is designed to continue the love of money, to try and keep even less fortunate people as avid consumers.

Living your life in that manner, most times you cannot get ahead. It's another method, like that saying you sometimes hear, "Trying to keep the black man down"...Well rap music has been successful, when fans turn to crimes and other unsavory methods to obtain these same "riches", and lifestyles.

If you ignore the negative messages, and just enjoy the beats...there is plenty that's great about rap music!

Rap rhymes with crap. I believe, seriously, that listening to that awful "music" for hours on end causes brain damage, or at least it shrinks people's brains. I will take Rock or Country music over Rap "Music" any day. Long live rock n' roll!

There's rappers in every country that isn't 3rd world.

They probably think that you're self centered because you have time to think about whether they think about rappers when they're prolly mining for diamonds or boiling their water because it is insanitary.

Well it is a style of music like it or not it has it's place.

What's so great about any other genre of music? It's all a matter of personal taste. But, I think that if you're going to judge rap, you should look beyond the fancy sun-glasses at night-clad outer rapping. There are other rapper who rap about socially conscience issues. Q-Tip, Talib Kweli are probably the biggest names in alternative hip-hop. Before you bash an entire genre of music, you should actually listen to the best it has to offer, rather than the over-played, decent ones on the radio.

Yeah, cuz America had such a polished and erudite image before hip-hop came around!

j/k....but seriously: pick up Aesop Rock's "Float." It will show you what hip-hop really can be, rather than all the junk that riddles the airwaves and tv screens. There's plenty of other good hip-hop out there but this album for me is iconic of how relevant and artistic hip-hop has the potential to be.
